Phonics

Phonics is taught to the children from when they enter Foundation. They are taught daily for one hour. We use the scheme Read Write Incorporated (RWI) which incorporates all aspects of literacy, i.e. comprehension, phonics ( letter sounds) reading and writing. The children are initially taught the sounds of the letters and each of these sounds has a phrase to help the children recall it, for example ‘ai’ Snail in the rain. The children are taught by trained teachers and teaching assistants and they are assessed every half term. The reading book that your children brings home supports the level they are on for RWI . The expectation is that the child should read with fluency and speed therefore enhancing their comprehension skills.
