Making Learning Irresistible

PE and Sport Premium

Sports Premium Melbourn Primary School

At Melbourn Primary School we pride ourselves in supporting our children to learn about the importance of having an active, healthy lifestyle. We believe being active is crucial in improving our pupils’ concentration and attitude towards in-class learning and also has a positive impact on children’s mental health.

We are proud that in 2024/25 we achieved the Gold Games Award from our Schools Sports Partnership, which shows our dedication to improving our active provision for our pupils. Our 2 hours of PE a week is only a small part of how we engage pupils in sports and active lifestyles; we offer after school sports clubs, sports competitions intra- and inter-house competitions, sports workshops, themed days and weeks such as ‘Skipping Week’, ‘Children’s London Mini Marathon’, ‘Girls’ Football Week’; we have a dedicated Golden Mile track.

What is the Sports Premium Funding?

Each year we are given Sports Funding from the Government to improve the quality of Sports and PE provision in the school. This is known as the Sports Premium Grant. The rationale behind this was to ensure that there is an Olympic legacy for sport in England. The grant comes with certain guidelines about how this money can be spent. This academic year, we have been given £19418 to spend. Schools have been given the choice of how the money is spent, as each school setting has their own particular needs and areas on which they need to focus. It is money that is ring-fenced for sport to make additional and sustained changes to enhance the PE and sports provision in the school.

Vision and Objectives

We continue to change and improve our PE curriculum and sports provision, adapting the funding to using it for new initiatives, sports events, coaching and learning opportunities each year. Our main aim is that we want every child to leave primary school having been exposed to a number of sporting opportunities and understanding how important an active healthy lifestyle is to support them in their future lifestyles. Our objectives are to:

  • Engage children in daily physical activities and raise their awareness of healthy lifestyles.
  • Improve the profile of PE and in particular our running opportunities.
  • Provide children with experiences of an increased variety of sports across the academic year.
  • Continue to upskill teachers by working alongside our Sports Coach for professional development.
  • Offer opportunities for sporting activities outside of school – competitions, house events and engaging less advantaged and SEN pupils in sport.

What makes our vision unique at Melbourn?

We are fortunate to have a dedicated Sports Coach who supports us with PE lessons, active lunchtimes and sporting clubs. He is also a running coach and has encouraged the pupils at Melbourn to learn the skills to be better long-distance runners. Each year, all of our children take part in the ‘Golden Mile’ at least 3 times a week on multi-surface Golden Mile track. We then practice these skills by all pupils taking part in our inter-house cross country competitions and children represent the school at the Big Schools Cross Country event at Wimpole Hall Estate. To showcase and encourage some of our skilled runners we took children to represent the school at the London Mini Marathon in 2025. Our vision is to continue to encourage and involve all of our children in running. In 2025-2026 we are opening lunchtime running clubs that will use our local recreation ground to practice longer distances.

What have we used the funding for in 2024/25?

  • Sports Coach to deliver PE lessons, lunch time clubs, after school clubs, upskill teachers in their delivery of PE lessons and provide CPD.
  • Sports Coach (running) to enhance the profile of sport.
  • Transport to events such as Big Schools Cross Country and SSP (Schools Sports Partnership) events.
  • Royston FC to run lunchtime football sessions and after school structured clubs and coaching.
  • Swimming at Melbourn Sports Centre for our Year 3 children and top-up lessons for Year 4.
  • SSP (Schools Sports Partnership) agreement and support to enable us to attend events related to Sport and PE and to give the school the opportunity to have Scootability and Balanceability.
  • Opportunities for Bikeability for Years 4, 5 and 6.

What impact has the funding had?

  • We use some funding to have the opportunity to have a Sports Coach who works with teachers across all year groups to upskill them and to create opportunities for CPD across a range of sports. This is building confidence of staff and improving our PE provision and lessons.
  • We offer coached football sessions at lunch and after school. This has helped children learn how to play a team sport, build and learn new skills. It has also meant that girls and boys are keen to play football on their dedicated day, so 30 minutes of activity at lunchtimes.
  • After school clubs have a high uptake and throughout the year build on skills ready for competitions such as netball. Children feel more prepared and are building on skills learnt in PE sessions. Some children are exposed to sports that they would not otherwise have the opportunity to play.
  • We are successful at running events; the Big Schools Cross Country having children come in the top 20 across year groups and some 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Transport to these events is paid using the funding.
  • Children have the opportunity to take part in large sporting events such as the Mini Marathon in London, with one of our children coming in 14th place countrywide.
  • SEND, disadvantaged and less confident children are being encouraged and taking part in events such as the ‘Friendship Games’ and we are seeing confidence and enjoyment increase in sporting activities.
  • Children are taking part in Bikeability and this is making them safer on the roads and being aware of how to ride and take care of their bikes, creating independence and promoting a healthy way to travel.
  • Children in Year 3 are learning to swim at our local school pool with a 30-minute lesson per week for the Spring Term and top-up sessions for Year 4, to enable all children to leave us with water experience and knowledge of safety near water.
  • Children are being exposed to workshops and skills that they would not normally have the opportunity to experience, for example Scootability and Balanceability, because the funding helps us to be part of the SSP. We have also enjoyed visits from professional athletes that have inspired our children to try new sports.

As a school we continue to review our provision for sport, PE and ‘active’ lifestyles and adapt, change and improve to help our children have a healthier, happier future and a better understanding of sport and its benefits.
